LCD vs Plasma vs DLP

A Three-Way Comparison to Help You Find the TV That Best Suits You

The ongoing debate over which TV is best can cause consumers headaches. Here is a quick and easy breakdown of the three units.

Check out "LCD vs Plasma vs DLP January 2009 Update" for an update on this article.

It's important to do your homework before purchasing a big screen television. There's a lot of junk out there that might save pennies up front, but ultimately ends up biting you in the back side with its lack of durability, lesser quality and other problems. However, before considering what brand to buy, you should first determine what kind of big screen TV you're looking for.

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) TV

Advantages

  • LCDs are good for still images and make good computer monitors. So, if you're looking for a screen for TV and computer use, LCDs are a good bet
  • Quality LCDs have excellent brightness level pictures.
  • LCD flat panels don't take up room and can be mounted on walls. In addition, LCDs are typically slightly lighter than Plasma TVs.
  • Quality LCDs have a fairly long life, especially compared to older models (roughly 13-15 years at a six-hour per day pace.
  • There are more 1080p LCD models than plasma (you'll see a sharper picture with a 1080p model).

Disadvantages

  • LCDs are not good for fast-moving pictures. When an object moves quickly across the screen, the image "delays" (there are trails of pixilation or blockingess), because the screen can't keep up. For this reason, LCDs that are 37" or smaller generally have better image quality because the delay is less noticeable than on larger LCDs.
  • LCD TVs have difficulty with black levels
  • LCD image looks great when you're staring directly at it, but if you are watching from a slanted view the quality of the image can diminish greatly.
  • LCDs are very expensive over 35"
  • LCDs sometimes have pixel failure. This isn't a common problem with top name brands, where one or two pixels might eventually die, leaving a black dot here and there. This is hardly noticeable unless you're standing directly in front of the screen (considering a 20" LCD screen has 30,000 pixels). However, in cheaper models where 10% of the pixels could go out, the TV may become unwatchable.

NOTES: There are a lot of junk LCDs out there, so stick to top brand names. Sharp is generally credited for making the best quality Plasma TVs.

Plasma TV

Advantages

  • Top name brand plasmas have a fairly long life, lasting about 20 years at a six hours per day pace.
  • A plasma screen has a field vision of about 180 degrees without loss of picture quality. That means you can watch the screen from any angle.
  • Plasmas are very bright (about 4-5 times brighter than the average TV)
  • They have great contrast ratios (enables them to show better shadow detail)
  • Plasmas are generally cheaper than LCDs
  • They have excellent picture response. There is virtually no delay (blockiness or pixilation) like with LCDs.
  • Doesn't take up much space and can be mounted on a wall.

Disadvantages

  • Plasmas can have burn in problems. Plasmas do not make as good computer monitors as LCDs. If you were to leave the Plasma TV on for 24 hours a day and there was an image that remained constant on the screen (like a logo), you would run the risk of that image permanently burning into the screen. However, the chance of this happening is often over-exaggerated.
  • Plasmas are not available below 37 inches.

NOTES: There are a lot of junk Plasmas out there, so stick to top brand names. Panasonic is generally credited for making the best quality Plasma TVs. Also, do not purchase a used Plasma TV on eBay. The first generation Plasma had poor contract and brightness.

DLP (Digital Light Processing) TV

Advantages

  • DLP screens are larger and are cheaper in the short-term than LCD or Plasma.
  • Good brightness and color. DLP can illuminate a larger screen for more people at a cheaper initial cost than Plasma.

Disadvantages

  • There's a high maintanence cost. The DLP TV is basically a video projector in a box. You have to replace the lightbulb, which has limited durability.
  • DLPs take up a lot more space than Plasma and LCD and are not wall mountable.
  • DLPs don't have as good field vision as Plasmas, meaning you can't get as good picture quality when viewing the screen at an angle.
  • DLPs are not known for having that great of picture quality.
  • Fast moving objects can cause a trail of colors (color artifacts).

Phil,

How can 2 different manufacturers be "generally credited for making the best quality Plasma TVs" as stated in your article being Sharp & Panasonic?

Under LCD TV at the bottom, I think it's supposed to say "Sharp is generally credited for making the best quality LCD TVs.", not plasma

I just purchased a Samsung DLP over the Mitsbishi because the picture was about 10 times better. Both my sons have a 52" LCD and a 52" Plasma. Great pictures. But choosing the DLP over the Plasma and LCD came from much research. The bigness of the set is the least of my problems. Big disadvantage of Plasma is burn in and life. Big disadvantage of LCD was price at 67". Disadvantage of DLP was upkeep and viewing. But having an X-Box, a larger then normal living room and a 4 year warranty that covers bulbs, I felt that $2700 for 67" Samsung, a 4 year warranty, free shipping and a Stand was a worth while investment. In fact, Best Buy beat Amazon's price on the same set and had a better warranty. Amazons price was 1897.00 Best Buy 1895.00. The only difference was that I have to pay $106 tax.

I bought a Samsung 67" DLP HDTV from Costco for $1699. I view it from 15'. My couch is directly in front of the television at that distance. I have watched Dish Network HD television and 1080p Blu-Ray discs on my Playstation 3. All I can say is wow! The picture quality is amazing. Don't forget about DLP where you have the room!

Folks!

Check the date of this article! It's almost two years old, which means the technology's bound to have changed. Some of your comments are out of context.

Researched 4 years ago--bought DLP--(52")-NEVER regretted it.Angle of view is not 180--but excellent-pic is sharp-esp HD-"Replace Lamp" warning started flashing 8 months ago-bought a new one for $300.00-but haven't had to use it yet-if/when I must--its dead easy--and TV will be like new again.Light in weight-only about 12 inches in depth-with proven, durable and reliable operation-I'd buy DLP again without hesitation

I'm here researching replacing my DLP...have had it about 2 1/2 years. The sound is totally shot and would require a $700.00+ trip to the manufacturer to fix it. The bulb died this morning...no cute warning on our set. DLP may have some advantages, but right now this one is killing me! I'm going to replace with either Plasma or LCD!

Bought a 51" DLP made by Vivitek..big mistake! Purchased it from SHOPNBC with an extended warranty..was assured the warrant & extended warranty covers the lamp. After less than 1 year the lamp went bad. I tried to replace under the warranty from Vivitek & the extended warranty folks..they refused to replace the lamp under warranty..I contacted SHOPNBC..they assured me the lamp was covered under warranty..from Vivitek & the extended warranty people. WRONG!! So I shelled out $196 for a new lamp. Less than 6 months the lamp went bad again..so another $196 for another lamp. Now the tv has a flickering & color is distorted after watching for about an hour. After it heats up. I power it off & it's okay for another 30 minutes or so..then back to the flickering & color problem. I suspected the tv is getting hot & I have a fan problem..I removed the panel at the fan..the tv does well with the exception of some minor color distorted..I went to Viviteks web site after contacting them via telephone about my problem..in their troubleshooting guide..nothing to help me..I called Vivitek back to get a parts schematic..they would not provide me with one because I am not an official repair tech..I am technically inclined & feel I have 2 problems (1) a bad fan (2) some kind of color module is bad or the color vue part..However, Vivitek support people are terrible & do not support their product at all!! So DO NOT PURCHASE a Vivitek DLP TV..They are the worst!! I purchased a second set..a 32" LCD by Sharp..so far so good. But comparing the LCD to the DLP..I honestly think the DLP is better..Just stay away from Vivitek..they are the worst in supporting their item!

I'm guessing things have changed some since this article was written. Does anyone know the latest? I'm completely lost in what to buy. I'm looking for something in the 40 inch to 50 inch range. No gaming or computer use. Suggestions?

Phil Partington :
One thing to consider is what you're looking for. For instance, plasma doesn't come smaller than 42". LCD is generally regarded as being better when it's 37" or smaller, but that can depend on the person.

Do you have a window on the opposite side of the room of where the TV's going? If so, you might want an LCD to avoid the glare factor of a plasma. LCD's also better for dual usage (computer/tv use). Plasma better for sports and video games, because it handles movement better. Plasma also has a wider range.

Those are just a few things to consider.

I bought a Toshiba 1080p 62 inch DLP almost 4 years ago, and the picture is still perfect with the original bulb. Its on about 6-8 hours a day. There's no trailing or ghosting on moving objects, and people are amazed at the picture. I'll take all the advantages over the supposed disadvantage of not bolting it to the wall !

I have two of the three; 42" Samsung Plasma (purchase 2005) Olivia LCD 36" (purchased 2005) I have had no problems with either and even think the LCD has a better picture ("sometimes" lol). The Olivia really kicks ass and I am very happy with it except for the colossal remote. Burn in can be a concern with the plasma however Samsung includes a screen cleaner or washer that sends an all white signal to the screen to wash away any burn in. I have seen some of todays DLP's that could compete with these Plasmas for sure.

I bought a 62" LG DLP 2 years ago for just under 2K, it's on all the time, PS3, XBOX360, Wii, tonnes of movies. I have no problems at all with it at all, and it wows everyone who sees it. If I have to replace 2 light bulbs in the next 10 years at 350 a bulb, that puts my purchase price to 2700$ or so, WAY cheaper then any other 62" TV that has any quality.

Bought a Toshiba 62HMX94 DLP TV 4.5 yrs. ago after much research and price comparison to plasma and LCD.It was the best picture for the dollar at the tine and I'm still quite happy with it.Only drawback is bulb life.Was told they would last 4 to 6yrs.2 yrs is all I've gotten out of them so far.Extended warranty at ABC warehouse has covered both so the warranty has already paid for itself and I'm sure I'll need another bulb before it expires!! $200 per bulb.Picture is amazing and I've never seen the "rainbow effect" or "color artifacts".I have DishHD and a Toshiba HDDVD player that was $50 {as a customer return} and Both sources look great on the T.V. Other than replacing the bulb every 2 or 3 yrs. I'm very happy with DLP!!!:}
